Founding Master of Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door
Gratitude to Namo Greatly Compassionate Pu Guang Gong De Shan Buddha
Venerable Jun Hong Lu (1959–2021), Australian Justice of the Peace and Founding Master of the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door, was a spiritual teacher of profound compassion and great resolve. Returning to the world through the strength of his sacred aspiration, he devoted more than two decades to propagating the Dharma, guiding countless individuals with karmic affinity and innumerable sentient beings. Sustained by this vow‑power, he served as a spiritual mentor to millions of practitioners, illuminating their lives with wisdom and compassion.
His Spiritual Origins and Vow‑Driven Return
According to the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, Master Lu attained Buddhahood countless kalpas ago and is revered as Da Le Tian Fo, the Buddha of Great Bliss. Moved by boundless compassion, he could not bear to see sentient beings sink and drift in the suffering of the Saha World. Rather than remain in the peace of Nirvana, he returned to the human realm through the strength of his sacred aspiration to relieve suffering and guide beings toward liberation. Across fifty-four successive lifetimes, he rescued those in hardship, alleviated suffering, awakened the Bodhi mind in countless hearts, and accumulated immeasurable merit. In the final kalpa of the Age of Declining Dharma, he undertook the mission of propagating the True Buddhist Dharma and guiding beings toward lasting peace. Through this, he has forged a bright path of liberation amidst the suffering of the human realm, bringing profound benefit to all sentient beings with karmic affinity across the ten directions.
Birth and Early Life
Venerable Jun Hong Lu was born in Shanghai, China, in 1959. Having lost his mother at a young age, he often accompanied his maternal grandmother in paying homage to the Buddha, drawing close to the Triple Gem and planting seeds of virtue early in life.
In his youth, Master Lu was intelligent, perceptive, kind‑hearted, generous, and compassionate. Whenever he witnessed suffering in the world, compassion naturally arose within him. Reflecting on the impermanence of life, he developed a deep aspiration to seek the truth, and his resolve to benefit society and help others gradually took shape.
In 1989, he travelled to Australia to pursue further studies. While abroad, he observed that although modern society enjoyed material prosperity, many people were inwardly troubled and spiritually adrift. They appeared successful on the outside, yet suffered within from illness, family conflict, depression, and uncertainty. Witnessing this deepened his compassion and strengthened his resolve to help sentient beings, gradually bringing his Dharma‑propagation mission to maturity.
Propagating the Dharma Worldwide
In 1997, under the compassionate guidance and blessings of Guan Yin Bodhisattva, Master Lu formally began his mission of propagating the Dharma and guiding sentient beings.
In 2007, he founded a radio station and began using modern media to share Buddhist teachings. Its broadcasts reached people across the world, allowing many to hear the True Dharma. Drawing on the compassionate guidance of Guan Yin Bodhisattva and grounded in the principles of cause and effect, Master Lu spoke in clear, accessible language that helped listeners understand life’s challenges, grasp the truths of existence, and recognise the path toward ultimate liberation.
In this Age of Declining Dharma, many people lack the karmic roots to understand or practise the Dharma, making it difficult for them even to encounter the teachings. Out of compassion, Master Lu used Totem Reading as a skillful means to reveal the hidden karmic causes behind their suffering, guiding them toward the Buddhist path and helping them establish right view.
At the beginning of his Dharma propagation, Master Lu introduced the Three Golden Buddhist Practices: reciting Buddhist scriptures, making great vows, and practising life liberation. He later added Buddhism in Plain Terms and the Eighty‑Eight Buddhas Great Repentance, forming the Five Golden Buddhist Practices.
Recitation helps eliminate karmic obstacles and increase wisdom; making vows strengthens one’s resolve on the spiritual path; life liberation cultivates compassion; Buddhism in Plain Terms awakens prajna wisdom; and the Great Repentance purifies the mind. Practised together, these five methods complement one another, enabling countless practitioners to recognise the law of cause and effect, abandon unwholesome actions, cultivate goodness, purify the body and mind, and gradually progress towards enlightenment.
Master Lu authored a vast body of teachings that spread across the world. Recognizing that many people struggle to grasp the profound meaning of classical scriptures. He tailored his guidance to individual karmic capacities, using accessible language to convey the core essence of the Dharma. His Buddhism in Plain Terms series uses clear, contemporary language to elucidate Buddhist principles, illustrate karma through real-life examples, and guide practitioners with practical wisdom. Through these teachings, countless followers have deepened their understanding of compassion, wisdom, karma, emptiness, and liberation, gradually transformed their habits, and strengthened their aspiration for enlightenment. These teachings have been compiled into series of books and distributed worldwide, becoming an important source of guidance for many Buddhist practitioners.
Over more than two decades, Master Lu recorded more than 3,000 Dharma programs and conducted over 300 Dharma talks and large scale Buddhist conventions. From small gatherings of just a few dozen people to the 80,000 person Dharma Convention in Singapore, his Dharma activities flourished, and his teachings spread across the world.
His Dharma propagation extended throughout Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Americas. Tens of millions of people around the world encountered and began learning the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door, and more than 30,000 disciples formally took refuge, embarking together on the path of cultivating the mind and practising the Dharma.
As the Dharma Door continued to flourish and more beings took refuge, Guan Yin Bodhisattva, moved by her boundless compassion and guided by her profound resolve, established the Guan Yin Citta Pure Land near the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss to receive and guide beings with karmic affinity.
Boundless Compassion and Vows
Master Lu devoted his entire life to spreading the Dharma, offering help to all regardless of wealth or status, nationality or ethnicity. His compassion was deep and unwavering, for he regarded the suffering of others as his own. Whether someone was burdened by illness, depression, family discord, or setbacks in life, Master Lu offered guidance with a heart full of kindness, bringing comfort, clarity, and hope to those in need.
He often said that his only wish was for all people to understand the Buddhist teachings, to recite the Great Compassion Mantra and the Heart Sutra, and for everybody with karmic affinity to be freed from suffering and attain happiness.
Throughout more than twenty years of Dharma propagation, he devoted himself wholeheartedly, tireless, unwavering, and never allowing even a moment of complacency. Through learning the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door, many individuals transformed the course of their lives, overcoming personal hardships, restoring harmony within their families, regaining peace of body and mind, and, most importantly, rediscovering hope. In moments of despair they found light. In times of confusion they found direction. In the midst of suffering they found renewal.
Virtue Honoured Across the World
Beyond sharing the Dharma, Master Lu actively promoted social harmony, multicultural exchange, and charitable service. For many years, he dedicated himself to fostering the spirit of compassion, peace, inclusiveness, and gratitude, nurturing mutual understanding and friendship among different cultures and religions.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace in Australia and received numerous international honours, including the World Peace Award and the title of World Peace Ambassador. Government bodies, community organisations, and charitable institutions across various countries and regions also presented him with awards acknowledging his efforts in advancing world peace, social harmony, charitable causes, and the promotion of traditional Chinese culture.
Passing and Enduring Legacy
Throughout his years of Dharma propagation, Master Lu worked tirelessly day and night, devoting himself completely to the welfare of others. Although years of unremitting effort took a heavy toll on his health and caused him to grow increasingly frail, his compassion never diminished, and his resolve only grew stronger.
On 10 November 2021, the sixth day of the tenth lunar month, Master Lu peacefully entered Nirvana in Sydney, Australia. Monastics and lay practitioners alike were overcome with grief, and disciples across the world held memorials in his honour. Many followers remembered his selfless teachings and his lifelong dedication to sharing the Dharma. Although Master Lu appeared to physically depart from this world, his spirit has never left, and his Dharma voice has never ceased. His passing marked not an end, but the beginning of a new chapter in the global propagation of his Dharma teachings.
Transmission of the Dharma Lineage
Throughout history, the preservation and flourishing of the lineage have depended on its faithful transmission from one generation to the next. Although Master Lu has departed from this world, his profound resolve continues to inspire and guide. To carry forward his mission and ensure that the Right Teachings endure, Master Lu passed on the Dharma lamp and lineage to Master Lien Hua Tung Tzu (Dharma name)- Qiao Shuo, entrusting her with the responsibility of continuing the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door.
With one hand, he draws beings away from the suffering of samsara; with the other, he lifts disciples toward the city of Nirvana. Out of boundless compassion and his unwavering commitment to sentient beings, Master Lu entrusted Master Lien Hua Tung Tzu, Qiao Shuo, to continue transmitting the Dharma voice. Carrying forward Master Lu’s compassionate spirit and his lifelong aspiration to benefit the world, she continues the mission of sharing the Dharma, guiding sentient beings to learn Buddhism, cultivate the mind, understand the law of cause and effect, purify the heart, and progress along the path toward awakening and liberation.
Abiding in the Pure Land
Throughout his life, Master Lu devoted himself wholeheartedly to sharing the Dharma, benefiting beings throughout the Ten Directions. His aspiration was vast and unwavering, his teachings reached far and wide, and his guidance illuminated the world with wisdom and compassion, leaving behind countless and immeasurable merits. After he entered Nirvana, Shakyamuni Buddha personally bestowed upon him the Buddha title Great Compassion Pu Guang Gong De Shan Buddha (literally, “Great Compassion Illuminating Merit Mountain Buddha”).
Thereafter, the Great Compassion Pu Guang Gong De Shan Buddha took residence in the Guan Yin Citta Pure Land, where he continues to expound Buddhist teachings for heavenly beings, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and all those who will be reborn there in the future. In recognition of his selfless and boundless compassion, he is revered alongside Shakyamuni Buddha and Guan Yin Bodhisattva as one of the Three Buddhas of the Guan Yin Citta Pure Land. Together, they safeguard the Pure Land and guide individuals with karmic affinity along the path of cultivation and liberation.
A Legacy of Enduring Virtue
Master Lu came into this world through his great aspiration, lived a life grounded in kindness, and fulfilled his mission through sharing the Buddhist teachings and benefiting sentient beings.
In a mortal body, he embodied the conduct of a Buddha and devoted his entire life to the fulfilment of his sacred promises. Though his physical form has passed from sight, his Dharma voice continues to endure. His spirit of boundless kindness will continue to shine upon the Saha World, and the Dharma lineage of the Guan Yin Citta Pure Land will carry on, benefiting immeasurable sentient beings for generations to come.
